Abstract

The issue of " وجوه " (similar words) and " نظائر " (analogous words) in the Holy Quran has long been a focus of interest for scholars of Quranic sciences. Each scholar, based on their intellectual foundations and capabilities, has taken significant steps in explaining the conceptual and practical aspects of these terms. The oldest extant work in this field is the book "Al-Ashbah wal-Naza'ir" authored by Muqatil ibn Sulayman al-Balkhi (d. 150 AH). This study aims to provide a precise analysis of the interpretive methodology for Quranic vocabulary in the second century AH through a re-examination and analysis of Muqatil ibn Sulayman's approach in his book, using an inductive method. This analysis will pave the way for future research in the semantics of Quranic words. The study concludes that Muqatil utilized two approaches—intratextual and extratextual—to understand the various facets of Quranic words. In the intratextual approach, he employed methods such as interpreting the Quran with the Quran, considering the unity of context, and examining the circumstances of revelation. In the extratextual approach, he drew upon linguistic rules like homonymy, figurative language, metaphors, and antonyms. It is evident that the use of the intratextual approach, particularly considering the context of verses, predominates over the extratextual approach in this book.
