Abstract

This study made an effort to explain the estihaei method used in Quranic exegesis. This is a new method of Quranic exegesis that Seyyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah introduced in his Min wahy al-Qur’an. The phrase “kaifa nastouhi ba’adh...” and the term “estiha’a” appear several times throughout the book. The term “estiha” implies being inspired by Quranic verses and then coming up with ideas, and the estihaei method in the exegesis of a verse connotes reaching other worlds. According to Fadlallah’s exegetical approach, the Quran is an eternal scripture for human life because it has a dynamic mission. According to him, inspiration for the Quran must be sought out regardless of time or place because it is an alive and eternal text. This study investigated the extent to which Fadlallah employs rhetoric, Quranic sciences, hadith citation, and his social-educational approach in his estihaei method. The findings indicated that what Fadlallah achieves from the Quranic verses using the estihaei method is based on his expertise in reaching the soul of the Quranic verses, rather than the implications of the verses, though at times, what he perceives differs significantly from what the verse states. Surah Al-Jumu’ah was the primary focus of this study. Surah Al-Jumu’ah was selected because it contains sociopolitical topics
